このお堂に安置されている観音は、安産・子育ての信仰が厚く、
茂原観音とも呼ばれ親しまれている。60年に一度、開帳(公開)される
という秘仏であるため、金箔がよく保たれて
いる。下野33観音霊場の20番札所として信仰
されている。
縁起では、「承安4年(1174)、この地に住ん
でいた宇都宮氏の家臣震原遠江守家次が、枕辺
に立った聖観音の像を彫刻して安置した」と伝
えているが、室町時代に造られた仏像である。

This image. alias Mobara Kannon [Avalokitesvara of Mobaral.
enshrined in the main sanctuary of the Mobara Kannondo Temple
is famous for its power of answering prayers for easy delivery and
safe-childcare. Since it is opened to the public only once a sixty
year, the gilt is kept in excellent condition. The temple has been
embraced as the twentieth branch of the Thirty-three Temples
Dedicated to Avalokitesvara in Shimotsuke District, where anmutets
are distributed to Buddhist pilgrims.
History says that the image was offered by Totominokami letsugu
Mobara, arvassal of the Utsunomiya Family.. who teceived a
revelation in his dream, in Joan 4 1174)、Yet, in fact, it is an
example of the Muromachi Period,
