「間引き」とは、生まれたばかりの子どもを家の生活が苦しいため
に殺してしまうことである。江戸時代に幕府や藩は、「間引き」を厳し
く禁止し、特に宇都宮藩は「間引き」
禁止の教育に熱心であった。
この絵馬は、天保14年(1843)、地元
の名主によって奉納されたもので、こ
れらを使って、村の人たちに「間引き」
の悪行(悪い行い)を説いたという。

This painting was offered by the headman of a local village in
Tenpe 14 [1843] in order to admonish the village people for their
evildoing that is infanticide
"Mabiki" is a Japanese term signifying infanticide, caused by
hardships of life. During the Edo Period, the feudal government
and clans strictly prohibited this terrible practice, among them, the
Utsunomiya Clan was intent on propagating anti-infanticide
education
